Lies, chocolates, and a new life
2010-01-02
Thirteen-year-old Peter lived in a village called Vaniput.  He was a handsome boy, with a beautiful double chin.  He had only one drawback.  He used to lie a lot.  Even for petty things, he told lies.  His parents and teachers thought of many ways to change him, but it all went in vain.  He kept on lying.

This continued for days. Until the day Peter’s best friend, Vinoth, celebrated his birthday at school. He distributed sweets to all his friends. Peter liked the chocolate so much that he wondered if he could ask another one. But he was sacred to ask. However, during the lunch break, he stole the sweets from Vinoth’s bag and ate all of them slowly. After lunch, Vinoth came to see the sweets, but alas, they were gone.
Vinoth started to cry. The teacher tried to console him, but it made things worse. He cried more. The teacher was clever. She checked the lunch box of all the students in the class. All the boxes were either empty or had some leftover food, except Peter’s. His box was fully loaded with lime rice and it was still hot.
“So he has not even opened his lunch pack,” wondered the teacher.  She went to Peter and asked him, “Did you eat your lunch well?” Peter nodded surprisingly. “Ok liar, what did you have for lunch?” Peter was dumbfounded. “Er…. Biriyani,” Peter stammered, trying hard to cook up a story.
“Yes, now walk to my room,” she said, sternly. Peter followed her meekly to the staff room. “You stole the sweets, am I right, liar boy,” the teacher accused him. “No, Miss,” he responded quickly. “Then why didn’t you eat your lunch,” the teacher asked. “I was not hungry,” he shot back. “How could you be, you ate a box full of sweets,” she said narrowing her eyes. Peter could not go on. He realized he had been caught.
The teacher rushed out of the staff room saying she will tell Vinoth everything. Peter felt very bad. He was used to being caught lying, but this time he was very scared. The teacher returned and said, “Vinoth is going to tell his father, you know the muscle bag, it is his nick name.” At this point Peter began to cry. The teacher then counseled him. “See if you promise me that you will never lie, I will tell Vinoth not to tell anyone about this incident.” Peter nodded sincerely. He kept his word too. He never lied and became God’s child.
Peter’s total transformation was a mystery to everyone, except to his teacher, who was happy that her little drama had worked.
